The monkey population at the shrine (mazar) of Chashni Pir, one of the companions of the 14th-century Sufi saint Shah Jalal, is in popular tradition thought to descend from Chashni Pir’s pet monkeys. His mazar in the hilly area of Amberkhana in Sylhet, known as Monkey Hill (Banorer Tila), is home to around 200 monkeys that are fed by a continuous stream of visitors who believe that if the animals accept their food offerings, their supplications become fulfilled.
