The Jinn Dargah at Firoz Shah Kotla in Delhi, India

Religious Pluralism, Shared Sacred Sites in the Indian Subcontinent and the Balkans

Ethnographic fieldwork in Delhi, India, June 2019 and March 2020 | Outcome: 3 conference papers and 1 peer-reviewed book chapter [forthcoming]

The shrine (dargah) of the jinn-saints is housed in the ruins of a 14th-century fortified palace complex, Firoz Shah Kotla. Not only Muslims but also large numbers of Hindu and Christian devotees flock to the sacred site to visit the jinn-saints each Thursday afternoon. Sharing a common social, economic and physical environment, and similar psychological and spiritual needs, these followers of different faiths participate in common ritual practices, generating a trans-religious culture at this shared sacred site.
